ANSC 2251 Lecture Notes - Maxillary Sinus, Foramen Magnum, Appendicular Skeleton
Document Summary
Periosteum = dense ct membrane covering surface of bone. Articulation / joints = union of bones. Cartilage = dense, smooth blue-ish tissue covering articular surface of bone. Long bones = limbs, levers, support body weight. Short bones = carpus and hock, absorb shock. Flat bones = ribs, scapula, skull bones, enclose cavities w/ vital organs. Axial skeleton = skull, spine, vertebral column, ribs, sternum, tail. Cranium = flat bones, protect brain, joined @ immovable joints (sutures), form orbit and nasal cavities. Maxillae (upper jaw) - 6 cavities for cheek teeth, 6 for upper incisors. Mandible (lower jaw) - attached to cranium w/ movable joint, cavities for 6 lower molars, interdental space (bit goes here), cavities for 6 lower incisors. Foramen magnum = large opening in skull, spinal cord passes. Ribs = joined by thoracic vertebrae, determine size/shape of chest. Sternum = canoe-shaped, 7 or 8 bony segments joined w/ cartilage.
