Document Summary

Dialects are variations of a language that are not standard . Languages have only recently been standardized in human history, with the creation of the dictionary and rules of grammar. The standardization of one form of language over another, is a statement of power. Dialects that do not follow the standardized language therefore become the less powerful group. Things become standardized in a language on purpose. Example: when france became one nation, it did not encompass a group of people who spoke the same language, acted the same and had the same values, beliefs and traditions. A decision had to be made about what the main language of france would be. The people in power making the decisions were in paris and spoke parisian french, so that became the standardized language of the nation. They persist because you"re taught what your parents teach you in the context of where you grow up, and different regions have different dialects.
