- Early 1650s, ..
- Catastrophes pick up sediment and make new layers. They change everything.
- This ties into evolution- everything is changing- progression.
- Lyell- do we need a catastrophe for new strata to be built?
○ There is a uniform way that the world is going to change.
§ Darwin thought of this also.
- You need to be embedded in the field - you need to be well respected to bring your
own ideas.
- Lamark - inheritance of acquired characteristics!!**
○ Evolution was always progressive- always going towards something better.
○ Every time there is a genetic change, it is going to be better for you.
○ Believed that offspring only acquired positive traits.
- Darwin traveled all over the place
○ Trying to understand the rise and fall of populations.
○ Concept of natural selection
○ Taxonomy
○ Looking at why some people live and why some people don’t
○ Publishes findings in 1850s
- Natural selection- process by which nature selects forms most fit to survive and
reproduce in a given environment and those forms do so in greater numbers than other in the
same population.
- You can be fitter for a specific environment - ability to hide under a desk that will protect
you. (smaller person would be more fit)
- Artificial selection involves human involvement which changes things around (dog
breeding)
○ Wisdom teeth - we changed it for society
- Adaptation:
○ Spotted moths
§ Some moths fit in and others didn’t - depending on background
□ Makes the population smaller for the ones that standout
○ You never know what strains could affect you or unaffected you
§ Not being sick when EVERYONE around you IS.
○ Darwin wanted to understand how traits passed and where did trait variation
