Persuasion- involves one or more persons who are engaged in the activity of creating, reinforcing, modifying, or extinguishing beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations, and/or behaviors within the constraints of a given communication context. Attitude- learned predisposition to respond favorably or unfavorably toward some attitude object. Attitude object- something you can feel something for. Psychological consistency- humans are motivated by inconsistencies and a desire to change them. Causes imbalance in individuals and the tension from this imbalance motivates people to change these inconsistencies. Balance theory- 3 cognitive elements may be balanced or imbalanced. If imbalanced, the least important is usually changed. Cognitive dissonance- cognitions- perceptions of an object or idea, related to how much money/investment is involved, inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, attitudes. Consonant cognitions- granola bars are low in fat, which means they"re healthand i love to eat granola bars! Cupcakes are high in sugar, which means they"re unhealthybut i love to eat cupcakes.
