COMM 1000 Lecture 5: Lecture 5: Listening
Document Summary
Listening is a process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or nonverbal messages. Construct the meaning out of the message you received. We then respond to what it is that they are saying. *this same process also occurs in nonverbal messages. Hearing is a physical/physiological process, involves receiving sound signals. Listening is a psychological process, we have to pay attention in order to listen. We spend more time listening to other people than we do any other activity. We are often preoccupied on ourselves, we often focus on what we say. Listening is highly correlated with personal and professional success. People who are good listeners are generally good communicators. Understanding: we have to try to understand what is being said. Remembering: we don"t really try to remember the conversation unless we care. Evaluating: we evaluate it to see if it"s important enough to or not to remember or to care for.
