Document Summary
A process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or nonverbal messages. Often when people are bad at remembering, they are thought of as a bad communicator even though they are doing the other steps. Barriers to listening: physical/psychological, psychological, conflicting objectives, poor listening habits. Listening styles: action oriented, the listener seeks a clear message about what needs to be done, also sometime called task-oriented listening, content oriented, listening that is focused more on the information and the meaning of the message. These listeners can become impatient with slow delivery and lengthy explanations. These show that you are actively listening and paying attention when people are talking to you. This is when you appear like you are listening, maybe nodding your head and saying. Yeah to them, but you are actually not listening and have not retained much information at all.
