Lecture 1: the process of communication: january 28, 2019. It keeps you alive: communicating about food, sex, survival. It impacts everything: verbal and non-verbal communication, doing it well is a skill, date, job interview, to gain acceptance or success, employers value it. Human communication: the process of managing messages for the purpose of creating shared meaning, an exchange occurs, a transaction, between at least two people, simultaneously sending and receiving messages, not a script, to and from one another. Messages: verbal or nonverbal, usually a blend. Intentional or unintentional: usually a blend, what we exchange, eye contact, body language, contact, words, emotion, scripts, make them up to make this easier, easy to mess up. Channels: the medium through which a message is sent, have to make the decision to call, text, email, talk in person, etc. Interference: noise, prevents message from being received, or prevents intended meaning from being understood.
