Lecture 1: Macbeth

• Macbeth and Banquo defeated two separate invading armies- Ireland and

Norway

• 3 WITCHES prophesize that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and

eventually King of Scotland

o their prophecy also says that Banquo will be the father to Scottish

Kings

• Macbeth named the Thane of Cawdor

o The previous Thane betrayed Scotland by fighting with Norway

• Duncan condemns the previous thane to death

• Macbeths wife wants to kill King Duncan to get the kingship

• Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to kill the king

• Macbeth stabs Duncan and kills the Chamberlains in the morning

• Macbeth is now king
