Happy new year would fall on the form-driven side of the spectrum, while diaboliques presents us with an intense, narrative-driven storyline. My initial impression of happy new year was rather lackluster, and i felt as if it left something to be desired in regards to a fulfilling storyline. On the contrary, my initial impression of diaboliques was more favorable. My main qualm with happy near year was that it appeared to have focused a little too much on formal elements to my liking (though, not nearly as much as warhol"s empire). Thus, i would like to say that happy near year is a form-driven film because it did not seem as if the narrative was the focus of the film.

Society is changing constantly and families has different point of view of how to live their life or raise their kids. I think what we know so far as a family will change in the near future. Furthermore for my own personal experience I have seen great thing from the changes that have come over the past years to now and it was acceptable by the society however, People and society in general like good changes. I can say that many values come from our parents and most are very worthwhile and I pass those values to my kids and I would like to retain them, but Family values are different from culture to culture and tradition and there will be change by the time, based on these I could say that it wonât be moral and immoral activities 50 year from now. We are goings lose moral value and ethic and I will see population decrease causing higher dead and less birth because government will soon controlling family life by limit how many kids a marriage couple could have. Since technology offer a good and effectively way to keep in touch with family around the world, but I also think technology will also affect family in the household. However, technology is taking control when the one on one communication is falling apart. The social media preventing family from communicating and less interaction with family and the society wonât have too much talking. I probably happy to say that the only positive thing that I will see 50 to 100 year from now will be major diseases like Heart attack , diabetes and cancer will largely preventing by the time with new scientist and good technologies. As a family we need to know and stay focus of who we are, in what we personally think values stand for because our action wonât always stay of our deepest belief. There is gab between our life values, action and behavior and if we retain those values chances are that even though 50 year from now wonât matter how great the external rewards.

As you may recall in the work of Triplett (1898), the presence of others in a bicycle race was found to enhance individual performance. This is called social facilitation (Williams, Harkins, & Karau, 2007). At times, however, the presence of others can detract from individual performance, which is termed social inhibition (Crisp & Turner, 2007). Similarly, social loafing can occur when an individualâs performance within a group decreases due to his or her reliance on others in the group (Crisp & Turner, 2007).

For this Discussion, review the media program, Week 5: The Virtual Office. Focus on the characters in the media and determine which characters displayed social facilitation, social inhibition, and social loafing.

Media Program

(Onscreen Text: The employees at the United Cardboard Company often work individually on projects, but as with most environments, they are occasionally asked to participate in group projects. One such group is about to meet right now to plan a presentation for the Board of Directors. Observe the conversation and reactions of various group members to determine which group members exhibit signs of the following: Social Loafing, Social Inhibition, and Social Facilitation.)

KEN: OK, I guess we might as well all get started. As we all know, the big man has requested the five of us to get together and write and conceptualize a presentation to the board on our new packaging system. Maybe we can start by going around and throwing out some initial ideas.

KATHY: Sounds good to me. I think a PowerPoint presentation would do the job well.

GAVIN: I agree. We could follow it up with a physical demonstration of how the packaging looks and folds-- maybe a video of the larger pieces that won't fit into the boardroom.

KEN: Sounds perfect to me. Amanda, Brian, what do you guys think?

BRIAN: Yeah, what you guys said sounds fine.

(Amanda thinks, âI donât know what to say!â)

KEN: Amanda?

AMANDA: I don't know. I didn't really get much chance to think about this. We only found out we needed to do this together three days ago.

KEN: OK, no worries. Let's focus on the PowerPoint idea. I've been doing a lot of them lately, so I'm happy to take the lead on the design aspect. What do you guys think we should all incorporate into the slides?

GAVIN: I think we should start with where we got the idea for this new packaging -- the company that designed it and the different sizes that it comes in.

KATHY: We should follow that with a graph comparing the old prices to the new ones to illustrate how much we'll be saving over time. Amanda, didn't you have most of that information collected at some point?

(Amanda thinks, âOh no! What if I deleted that?)

AMANDA: I don't know, maybe, it's been so long. I didn't think I'd need it again for a group project like this.

(Gavin thinks, âI wonder whatâs gotten into her. Sheâs not usually this tense.â)

KEN: That's OK, Amanda, I'm sure we can easily dig it up again. Brian, do you have any other ideas for the PowerPoint slides?

BRIAN: Nah, I think what you guys mentioned sounds right.

(Kathy thinks, âWow. Way to contribute Brian.â)

KEN: OK then, Kathy and Gavin why don't you send me all of the info and I'll write it up and make the slides. Amanda, don't worry about the cost saving document, I'm sure I can dig it up from my old emails and put it into that slide too.

AMANDA: Are you sure? I'm happy to look. I mean I'm sure I have it somewhere. (Kathy thinks, âShe really needs to get it together. Why is she so nervous?â) At least I think I have it somewhere. You won't tell the Board of Directors if I lost it, will you?

KEN: Of course not, we're in it together. So as I was saying, I'll write up and prepare all the PowerPoint slides. Then we can start our presentation with reading and explaining each slide. Then, what?

KATHY: Well, and then I think we should show them the packaging live, and the quick deconstructing techniques.

KEN: Great idea. You and Amanda can demonstrate the folding, while I narrate what you're doing.

(Amanda thinks, âIs he doing too much of the work? And what if I drop everything while heâs talking?â)

GAVIN: And after you all demonstrate the smaller packaging, we could show a quick video of how the really big ones function down at the warehouse. Brian, would you be able to go film that quickly one of these days?

BRIAN: I don't really have any experience with video cameras or anything like that, so...

(Gavin thinks, âI should have seen that one coming.â)

KEN: That's OK. My wife actually just got me this great little camera for our anniversary. It takes great videos. So I can just run down to the warehouse, get some footage, then put it together on this new editing software I just downloaded. Maybe add a little music. It's going to be really slick!

KATHY: Are you sure, I wouldn't mind doing that too.

KEN: Oh no, it's fine. I love this kind of stuff; just leave it to me. But I suppose that's enough planning. Now it's time to get to work and make the presentation a knock out. Go team!

Bond Accounting

In December 2014, Rene Cook sat in her cubicle trying to remember what she had learned in business school about bonds and bond accounting. Ms. Cook, a new CPA and special assistant in a training assignment with the company president, had just met with David Lyons, president of Lyons Document Storage Corporation. Interest rates had fallen over recent years and he had asked her to think about the consequences issuing new bonds at a lower rate of interest and using the proceeds to repurchase the higher coupon rate bonds that are currently outstanding. My Lyons had asked Rene to focus on how much the companyâs annual interest payments could be reduced, how reported earnings would be affected, and how the refunding would change the companyâs financial position as referenced on the balance sheet, if at all.

The Company

The Lyons Company was a family business in the stationary supply business until the document storage opportunity appeared in the early 1990âs. Lyons Document Storage Corporation was incorporated in 1993 to compete in the emerging and rapidly growing industry that provides secure, off-site storage of documents for other corporate customers. The demand for storage was fueled by the need for corporations to retain records of sales contracts, employment records, compliance records, and other documents. The convenience of secure storage and easy recovery in professionally managed warehouses appealed to corporate clients that wanted to save space in their more expensive office buildings. At the same time, the stationary supply business was growing more competitive with the entrance of Staples, Office Depot and Office Max.

The early 2000âs were difficult for Lyons because there were still differences among management about directions and the companyâs future. A large competitor, Iron Mountain, was expanding rapidly in the United States and internationally. When the decision to focus on document storage was made, it was imperative to move quickly to secure storage space and transportation equipment. Management decided to fund the companyâs growth by issuing debt rather than by issuing additional equity. Lyons had operated conservatively without any long-term debt until it issued bonds in January of 2005. The bonds issued were $10 million in 20-year bonds, offering a coupon rate of 8%, with interest paid semiannually, and sold to yield the 9% market rate of interest at the time.

Current Situation

David Lyons had told Rene Cook that he felt the time might be ripe to refund the 2005 bond issue and replace it with bonds bearing lower interest rates. He had talked with the companyâs investment bankers who had told him that $10 million in new 6% bonds with semiannual interest payments could be issued to provide the company with exactly $10 million, not considering underwriting costs and legal fees that were expected to be nominal. The bonds would pay $300,000 of interest every June 30 and December 31 with a payment of $10 million in principal at the end of 10 years. The new interest payments would be $200,000 less each year than those due on the old bonds, which still had 10 years before they would be paid off. To Lyons, that seemed to offer a saving over the old bonds.

The existing bonds had been issued on January 1, 2005 and would be due December 31, 2024. Interest was paid semiannually to holders of the bonds.

Beginning her research, Rene reached for her copy of Lyons Document Storageâs 2013 Annual Report. (See Exhibit 1 for the Liabilities section of the 2013 Annual Report.) She was confused as to why the liability for the $10 million bonds was only $9.3 million at the end of 2013.

To clarify her understanding, Rene called the companyâs controller, Eric Petro, and learned that the 2005 bonds had been issued at a discount. Only about $9.1 million was received when the bonds were issued. For further information, Petro referred Rene to footnote 8 of the companyâs 2013 financial statements (Exhibit 2).

Next, Rene went to the Internet to determine the market price of the companyâs bonds. The current price was shown as 114.88 â reflecting the 6% yield the market for bonds was currently supporting. This meant that each $1,000 bond would have to be repurchased for $1,148.77. The company would have to spend $11.5 million to retire bonds that would be listed on the December 2014 balance sheet at less than $10 million. The resulting loss would shrink the 2015 projected earnings and slow the growth rate in earnings about which David Lyons was so proud. Rene knew this would not make Mr. Lyons happy. However, the lower interest payments associated with the new bonds would help reduce cash outflows in future years.

1. There is no indication in this case that the 2005 bonds were âcallableâ. Assume that the bonds are callable at 102. That is, there is a 2% call premium over par value.
