Document Summary

Folk culture, popular culture, and mass culture. Mass produced books, clothing, processed food, electronics, household goods. Cultural values are constantly changing, but cultural change is a long- term process. Diffusionism: ideas spread from where they are first developed. Acculturation: process of adopting some aspect of another culture. Areas and regions can reveal themselves through visual clues or visible traits. Customs, language of local signs, clothing, goods in shops, built environment, building material, architectural style, monuments and statues. Substitution of one set of cultural traditions by another. Degrading those who fail to acculturate and rewarding those who do. Usurpation of power to define local tradition. Spatial and cultural isolation is very rare today. Age-area principle: as ideas spread, oldest ideas are farthest from the center. Technology has changed the way people communicate. Roads, ships, and railroads quickened movement of ideas between countries. Localization: translation of content into other languages.
