Bronfenbrenner is the main theorists we will follow. Theory: explanations for observations (observe children reared together are somewhat different > theory tries to explain this) Observations > theory > research >observation . People develop in unique ways over time physically, socially, cognitively, intellectually, and morally and we are looking to find out why: we want to explain this. Kids will take something if they think they can get away with it, but as they grow and mature they gain a respect for rules, authority, and ethics they stop doing this. These theories are meant to explain/account for these unique differences. Traditional debate revolves around contributions of nature vs nurture essentially meaningless and functionally useless . A lot of physical attributes are a result of genetics (height, eye color, genetic diseases, ect. ) Society reacts to these differences in your genetics and your life/environment becomes different. Predispositions come from genes: but these predispositions do not necessarily surface.
