Grandparenthood: underemphasized, understudied, misunderstood, the structure of grandparenthood. The way they organize their relationships with their grandchildren. How often do they see them, what kind of relationship- fun, adventure seeking. How they negotiate the relationship with their adult children. Grandchildren relationship is mediated through parents: the experience of grandparenthood (gatekeepers) I would argue that both of these are mediated through the legacy of the parent/child relationship. Parents relationship with grandparents filters into grandchild relationship. Positive connections over time create opportunities for intergenerational connections, support, and generativity. Personal authority transformation- adult like relationship instead of parent-child. Personal support convoy that travels with children throughout life-grandparents are important part of this. Negative connections over time increase the likelihood of cross-generational coalitions, triangling, and splits. When conflict exists in families, conflicts occur-cross generational triangulation: parents and grandparents grandparents and grandchildren. Parents overtly or covertly block grandparents access to grandchild. Grandparents seek an alliance with the grandchildren .
