Elaboration of locomotion: kids develop ability to be physically present in their environment, more capable of being mobile, walk, talk. Need to regulate this: important physical development that will evolve in its own way, range in which kids will master these skills (coordination, walking) Should not attribute these to later qualities, do not necessarily contribute. Locomotion and the need for self assertion and mastery! Help us manage all of the demands and challenges ahead of us. Need to regulate interactions in a way that regulates positivity. Provide us with ability to evolve social ability, information useful to us as we move through time. Based in the ability to think symbolically. Semiotic thinking the use of mental symbols (words and objects) to stand for something else: ex. Toddlers play with box as if it"s their cave, play with chairs as if it"s a train.
