The union had a larger pop; more factories, better technology and better educated soldiers. Confederacy was worn down and bitterness lingered on for generations. The civil war is remembered differently on both sides. Veterans remembered parts of the war, the good parts. Southerners wanted to remember it as a war for states rights not slavery. Southerners also thought the war was a lost cause . Lincoln urged the nation to mend wounds. The end of legalized slavery not the end of racism. Alliance of african americans, white southern unionists, and northern transplants-all republicans held power. Emergence of white supremacist groups like the kkk. Eventual return to white supremacy in the south, in 1877. Emergence of the pro-business, pro-industry republican party as the new majority party in the north.
