Carlo Levi
● Born in Torino in 1902
● Medical Degree in 1925
○ Decides to be painter in 1927
● 1932-1934 living in paris
○ Active in Giutiza e Liberta movement
● Arrested for bringing anti-fascist materials into Italy
● 1935- Sentenced to confinement in mountains of Lucania
● Oct 31, 1926: Attempted assassination on Mussolini
○ Nov 5, 1926: Repressive tactics to combat anti-fascism passed into law

● Includes installment of the practice of “Confino”
● Painted a number of still lifes
○ Mainly boys and girls
● 1937- Levi escapes to France
○ Flees to Brittany when Nazis invade France
● 1942- Levi returns to Florence where he continues to organize and fight the w/ the
resistance forces
● Spring, 1943- Arrested again, released in July
○ While in hiding from ‘43-’44 he writes Cristo Si E Fermato A Eboli
