The schism in 1054 is the reason why we have the split in the church now. Part of sicily were still byzantine in 1054. 1091-1101: roger 1 (count of sicily and calabria) Norman dukes under his rule took over britain. Son of roger i, takes power officially in 1112 when he comes of age. All of them absorb and mix with the current tradition and culture of sicily. Land offered is in exchange for protection by military dukes. King owns all the land (this land is called the demesne) Gives some to the church and leases the remainder to the barons. Barons pay rent to the king and provide knights for military service. Portion of their lands is rented out to knights (aka vassals) Vassals provide service and allegiance to the kind and baron in exchange for land (fief) Kings take some land and rent out the rest to serfs. They serve the kings - provide food and service.
