Document Summary
That tall man ate an apple in the park in the morning. Good: [that tall man][ate][an apple][in the park][in the morning] Bad: [that tall][man ate an][apple in the][park in the morning] These intuitions are reflected by pronominal replacement. It should make sense after replacing with pronouns. Similar patterns are also observed in dislocation: [that tall][man ate an][apple in the][park in the morning] Bad: [man ate an][that tall][apple in the][park in the morning] If a string of words can be replaced with pronouns, it forms a unit on an intuitive level. If a string of words can be dislocated/moved, it is a unit on an intuitive level. Phrase structure rules- define structure and constituency of basic sentences. By basic sentences, i mean sentences with declarative sentences with svo order. Transformations- operations that take outputs of phrase structure rules and change them into another structure. We put a condition that transformations only apply to constituents.
