Words are (at least) the pairing of a sound and a meaning. Word: unlockable: can"t be locked, can be unlocked, why are there two meanings for this word, this is true for every word of the form un-x-able, where x is a reversible verb. One meaning: can"t be x"ed, the other: can be un-x"ed. Unlockable, undoable, unlearnable, etc: words built from the same parts, different verb in the middle, similar words because they use the same parts. Compositional: the meaning of a string if the meaning can be derived from the independent meaning of the parts and how the parts are put together by the rules of the language. Compositionality: we interpret meanings from smaller pieces and don"t even realize it. Jumped, failed, labeled: the ed makes them in the past, past tense: preset, prepay, prequalified: the pre means before.
