Document Summary

6-12 months: babbling begins, becomes variable and language specific by 12 months. 10-15 months: first words are produced: vocabulary explosion: word learning accelerates dramatically, usually around 18 months, complex morphology appears on words between 2 and 3 years old. 1-3 years: two word utterances, function words and longer utterances. Word segmentation: there is no obvious way to identify individual speech sounds in a stream of speech, stream of speech is a continuous modulation of amplitude and frequency. = # of some letter following another/ # of that other letter: ex: # of js following ss/ # of ss is very small, traditional probabilities alone are not enough to solve the word segmentation problem. Knowledge that children must have in order to solve the word segmentation problem fits into both domains: knowledge of syllable boundaries, knowledge that words only have one primary stress.
