Listeria induces phagocytosis: epidemic listeriosis: associated w/ contaminated foods (mexican cheese, coleslaw, milk, ice cream [grows in cold]), hummus, cold cuts) Esp. in pregnant women, immunocompromised: perinatal infections (transplacental) Early onset: intrauterine sepsis, stillbirth or shortly thereafter. Late onset: meningitis between birth & 3 weeks: meningitis or sepsis in immunosuppressed patients, specimens: blood, csf, placenta, amniotic fluid, treatment / prevention. Susceptible individuals should avoid products made from raw milk, packaged shredded cabbage, cold cuts and salads. Should eat cheeses made with pasteurized milk to avoid problems: symptoms. Respiratory distress: flared nostrils, rapid breathing, blue color (cyanosis) Not eating well, fever, rash, maybe fevers. Might need a shunt to release fluid and pressure: immunocompromised. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, back pain, headache. Exposed woman can carry on vaginal tract unknowingly (asymptomatic), than accidentally expose to baby: at risk.
