NURS 3120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Weight-Bearing, Etiology, Erythema
Document Summary
Use cephalocaudal approach with side to side comparisons. Symmetry usually establishes a normal pattern to exam compare right to left sides. Inspect skeleton & extremities for alignment, symmetry, and deformities. Temporomandibular joint: movement, sounds like cracking/clicking & tenderness. Inspect shoulders, cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine for alignment. Hands on hips and bend to test lateral flexion. Palpate elbows for tenderness, swelling and rom. Inspect for symmetry, stability of hip joint and tenderness. Side lying leg lifts, bend knees, extend leg from sitting. Do ankles have lateral of medial deviation. Joint itself should be smooth & non tender. Fracture = partial or complete break of the bone itself. Loss of bone density & decreased bone strength. Etiology: aging, decline in estrogen, calcium deficit & lack of exercise. Kyphosis convex curvature of thoracic spine. Ra chronic autoimmune inflammatory condition of the connective tissue. Gradual onset with fatigue, stiffness especially in am, muscles ache. Ligaments & tendons around the affected joints become fibrotic/shorten.
