Sensory component where we receive data or information from our internal and external environment. Stereognosis/sense that we can perceive size, shape & texture of objects. Our conscious process where we select, organization & interpret the information from our senses. Perception is also influenced by our previous experiences, knowledge and memories. Generally speaking 1 in 6 people experience sensory or communication disorders/impairment. May affect physical and mental/emotional well being. Impaired ability to communicate may lead to : feeling of social isolation. 2: poor performance in school and work. Impaired sense of smell/taste may lead to poor nutrition, inability to detect smoke, gas leaks or foods that may be unsafe to eat. Illness & trauma may result in sensory overload or deprivation. Patient/client may experience serious disturbances in visual, perceptual, cognitive or emotional functioning.
