Traumatic brain injury (tbi) violent blow or jolt to head or body; penetrating brain tissue. Tbi are twice as common in males. Deaths occur at three points in time after injury. Scalp is highly vascular profuse bleeding. Major complications blood loss and infection. Rhinorrhea or otorrhea indicate that a fracture has traversed the dura. Leaking fluid should be tested to determine if fluid is csf. Axons in subcortical white matter of the cerebral hemispheres. With depressed and open fractures and penetrating injuries. Can cause hemorrhage, infarction, necrosis and edema. Potential for increased hemorrhage if on anticoagulants. Bleeding between the dura and inner surface of the skull. Brief lucid interval unconsciousness followed by decrease in loc. Most common source are veins that drain brain surface into sagittal sinus. Size and location of hematoma determine patient outcome.
