NUSC 1165 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Integumentary System, Metabolic Waste, Urinary System
Document Summary
Atoms: contain carbon atoms in their structure. Cannot be broken down (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen- unique to protein) Cell: ex) cell membrane made of fats and protein. Tissue: groups of similar cells form tissues. Organ systems: group of organs that work together (ex. Organ systems responsible for obtaining and using nutrients in food: Facilitates the movement of nutrients into the body. Sends nerve signals to help control the passage of food through the digestive tract. Produces hormones to regulate food intake and the function of digestive organs (like the pancreas) Removal of water and minerals through the skin. Breaking food into components small enough so it can be absorbed into the body. Example: pizza- starch is broken down to glucose, protein is broken down into amino acids, triglycerides are broken down to fatty acids and glycerol. Process of taking substances directly into the body. Accessory organs: produce substances that assist with digestion but have no direct contact with digested food.
