NUSC 1165 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Consumer Protection, Scientific Method, Health Professional
Document Summary
Six classes of essential nutrients: carbs, water, protein, fat, vitamins & minerals. Nutrient provides most kcal/g: fat 9kcal/g. Nutrition is a science: advances in nutrition are made using the scientific method. The scientific method uses an unbiased approach to examine the interaction of food, nutrients and health: steps in scientific method. A well-conducted experiment requires: quantifiable data. Should be able to measure the info in a scientific manner: appropriate experimental population. Population should be large and pertinent to study: proper controls. Ensure population ate or drank what they said. Observational: no active intervention, used to explore relationships between conditions and outcomes, only suggest associations. Experimental: humans, animals, cells, treatments are randomly assigned, controlled. Randomly assigned to experimental group or control group for later comparison. Double-blind placebo controlled study: double-blind = researchers nor participants know who receives placebo or treatment until study ends, gold standard in research, placebo and treatment should be identical in look smell and taste.
