PHIL 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Gilbert Ryle, Category Mistake, Qualia
Document Summary
The whole world is made of ideas. The processing of information by the mind. Emotions are mental phenomena such as fear, hope, regret that require a content. Mood is an affective state that does not require a content (not about anything) Qualitative experience of the mind (referred to as qualia) Ex. experiencing pain, conscious of surroundings or thoughts. All aspects can all be simultaneously active in the middle. Ex. holding an orange you think about eating it or not, feel happy that it looks so delicious, and sense the coldness of its peel. Similar to plato"s rational, appetitive, and spirited tripartite soul. Recall the body-detachment argument from descartes and his theory that the mind is separate from the any physical aspect of the body. Recall the divisibility argument from descartes and his theory that while physical things can be broken down, mental things cannot. Obvious that mental and physical things interact.
