POLS 1002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Proletariat, Class Conflict, Bourgeoisie
Document Summary
Prefaces, "i. bourgeois and proletarians: the rise of capitalism. Marx and engels claimed that capitalism is modern ; it counts as progress over feudalism . Capitalism is a phase in human history. Land for servitude = feudal system of giving lower classes lands in exchange for services and loyalty. Marx and engels argue that civilized history is the history of class struggle. Competition and centralization simplifies the class struggle : bourgeoisie vs. Wages vs. profits, length of the workday proletariat. The ruling class wants the system to survive, the workers want for a new system in which they are more free, can control their labor more. Civil society is a disguised civil war, the state is a tool or instrument of class rule. Marx & engels argue feudalism leads to capitalism || capitalism leads communism. Feudalism = aristocratic ruling class, agricultural production. Capitalism = bourgeoisie ruling class, industrial production.
