POLS 1202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Civil Liberties, Life Satisfaction
Document Summary
Recent (1999 or later) breakdowns of democracy have not followed crises. One in 10 democracies with incomes less than (1985) dies when the economy shrunk for 1 year. In countries where income was between 2-5k, the rate is 1 in 16. Legitimacy and wealth can buy a lot of room. Specific support for democratic actors and institutions. Approval of core regime principles and values. Performance (as with democracy) matters a lot more for diffuse support than specific support. People can believe democracy isn"t working in their country and still believe it"s the best system. Even the best designed institutions need a compatible mass culture (inglehart 2005) Huntington: islamic/confucianist countries are unlikely to democratize. These approaches are almost always too broad. Catholics may accept the assumptions of political democracy, but never those of religious tolerancea real dilemma [thus] exists for the democratic process (lipset 1959, 95)
