Revolutions in particulr are hard to predict ahead of time. How opportunity actually plays out (absent obvious state weakness) There are details that vary by region and by case. Very few factors are sufficient for any specific income. But on average see general patterns you would expect. Look at the trend towards populist politics. A political movement which enjoys the support of the mass of the working class and/or the peasantry, but which does not result from the autonomous organizational power of either of these two sectors. It is also supported by non- working class sectors upholding an anti-status quo ideology (di tella). Populism is the label that political elites attach to policies supported by ordinary citizens that they don"t like (fukuyama). Defined by radical challenge to liberal institutusions? (laclau) Defined by policies use to court popular sectors? (edwards) Two definitions have become the most common. Top-down political mobilization of mass constituencies by personalistic leaders (levitsky and roberts).
