Electoral pressures can create incentives to engage in identity politics. The unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof in furtherance of political or social objectives. How does terrorism (potentially) help perpetrators to achieve their goals. Mediated message spread to group"s target audience(s) Civilians who put pressure on policy makers. Potential supporters who rally to the cause. Targets respond in a way that advances group interests. Terrorists are very bad at achieving their goals (influencing policy/government change) Goals are not communicated by the media. Extremism makes terrorists hard to negotiate with. Terrorism correlated with longer wars, not negotiation. Younger and more likely to be single. Since 1970s do not focus on democracies. Before then there were fewer partial democracies. Countries with economic discrimination have more terrorism (piazza 2011)
