Development and the rise of postmaterial values. People born in times of prosperity are more likely to consider and value postmaterial values. New politics vs more of the same. The same can be an emphasis on material politics. Or it can be a negative reaction to political correctness/tolerance. Also spawns new parties, tied to a multitude of civil society organizations. Differs from other cleavages that usually have roots in fewer civil society organizations. Role of the state in managing the economy/providing welfare. While the cleavage that generated them is oldparties (generally) are not. Hard to predict their preferences on other issues. Former east german communist party still popular in eg. Key issue: trad. values vs libertarianism (on the right) Right on state role in the economy (agricultural landowners) But secular social democrats will eventually compete for their loyalties. Key issue (initially): state subsidy of agriculture and protection from imports. Social conservative (church allegiance in countries w/o cd parties) (right)
