Cornea: protects the eye, helps focuses light. Pupil: the dark spot in the center of the eye; opening through which light enters. Similar to the aperture of a camera. Iris: constricts and dilates the pupil, letting more or less light into the eye. Lens: focuses light on near or far distances. May become weaker with age many older individuals wear reading glasses to see short distances. Retina: lining of the eye that detects light. Rods: work well in low light environments; help with seeing in dimly lit spaces and perception of movement in periphery of visual field. Cones: work well in bright light environments; help with color perception and spatial recognition. Fovea: center of focus and detail; part of the retina. Optic nerve: pathway from the retina to the brain. Dorsal stream: where or how pathway; action, spatial recognition. Ventral stream: what pathway; object recognition and meaning.
