PSYC 1103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Developmental Psychology, Moral Development, Autobiographical Memory
Document Summary
Perceived as a conflict and a source of stress. Many developmental psychologists examine what and why parents and teenagers fight about. Most conflict is over mundane issues (chores, curfew, etc. ) Gaining autonomy is a central developmental task during adolescence. Goals teenager is seeking autonomy, parent is reluctant to grant it. Views disagree over who should have control over certain issues (relationships, clothes or tattoos, social media, etc. ) Best outcomes are when autonomy is granted gradually. Avoiding too much too soon, as well as not enough soon enough (helicopter parents) There should be a gradual shift from parental control to joint decision making. Moral development : principles and values that guide how people should behave and treat others. Emphasizes that children are influenced by both parents as well as society at large. Presented research participants with moral dilemmas and analyzed their responses. Limitation: kohlberg only used male research participants.
