Cholesterol-based, lipophillic, pass through the membrane, binds directly to nuclear receptors to alter, generally act slowly. Steroids by nature are lipophilic- they are soluble in water, pass right through. When they enter neuron they bond to receptors and go into dna and modify: amino-acid based, lipophobic, bind to membrane receptors, uses a second-messenger system to alter, generally act quickly. Cholesterol is a fat membrane transcription of proteins directly. Melatonin is protein hormone that helps modulate circadian rhythm. All hormones hypothalamus produces operate to modulate other hormones. Crh is the only one that will be asked about. Determination of sex made by father, because father has x y chromosome. Chronically overstimulation will cause brain to downregulate in the opposite way. Brain will reorganize itself and upregulate receptors to compensate for heavy alcohol intake. Can give net effect of having more of the neurochemical present. Can block activity of neurochemicals by binding to receptor and making it.
