PSYC 2300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Walter Bradford Cannon, Hypothalamus, Pituitary Gland
Document Summary
Walter cannon studied shell-shock and traumatic shock. He later studied the symp nervous system and neurochemical transmission of nerve impulses culminated in his enunciation and development of the key physiological concept of homeostasis. Males and females tend to deal with stressful situations differently. Males are more likely respond to an emergency situation with aggression (fight), while females are more likely to turn and flee (flight), turn to others to help, or attempt to diffuse the situation. Tend-and-befriend response (2000)- more associated with females. During stressful times, a mother is especially likely to show protective responses toward her offspring and affiliate with others for shared social responses to threats. Shelley elizabeth taylor (1946) proposed tend and befriend. An attractive female is more attractive by males who encounters her while they experience a strong emotion (e. g. fear) than by males not experiencing a strong emotion.
