Document Summary
Group attitudes and values shape morally relevant behaviors motivated by a fundamental need for social structure. Most human behaviors are scripted: that is, they reflect learned expectations and rules about what to do and what not to do. Knowing and understanding these rules is necessary if one is to gain social rewards obtain approval and gain esteem and avoid punishment: ostracism, exclusion, and rejection. These expectations are organized by categories of individual and situation to form a role system. Rules for the game of basketball specify expectations for behavior across different situations and different persons. Expectations for a given person across situations define the role of that person. Expectations for a given situation across persons define the norms for that situation. Knowledge of and agreement about these norms and roles are necessary for social organization, that is necessary for the game successfully to be played.
