Married couple raised a chimp named vicki in their house. Chimp pharynx is too short to form words (about the same size as a human infant"s) Tried to teach a chimp american sign language. By age 5, learned hundreds of signs. She defintely understood lots of words, make basic sentences, and self-recognize but was not able to use grammar. Manipulated 3-dimensional plastic objects to make basic sentences. Trained on keyboard with symbols that had meaning (i. e. , food) Wanted fanta soda, but didnt have button for fanta. So she said me want coca cola that is orange) Sherman and austin (70s and 80s rumbaugh) One would be requester and the other would be the food provider. One side of glass window: austin has tray of different food. Other side of glass window: sherman can request food with different keys. Austin will give sherman food through a hole in the window. Could use sign language for words, but not form sentences.
