Document Summary

Voice disorder = voice is compromised (pitch, loudness, or quality is abnormal) Dysphonia: difficulty in producing voice bc of laryngeal issues. Aphonia: loss of ability to phonate bc of damage to larynx or mouth. Voice is produced from respiration + phonation. Described with frequency (pitch), intensity (loudness), quality (unique characteristics of voice) Frequency: fundamental frequency (f0) : basic rate of vibration of the vocal folds (hz) Adult women: 200 hz (10mm vocal folds) Adult man: 125 hz (16 mm vocal folds) Children: 250 hz or higher: f0 relates to: vocal fold length, mass, tension, changes with age. Intensity (loudness: relates to two features of vocal production: Amount of resistance to airflow by the vocal folds (contributes to excursion: how far apart vocal folds move and come back together) Voice quality: how well the two vocal folds work together, when normal, voice is pleasant and clear. If compromised, different quality: also influenced by resonance.
