Document Summary

90% of brain injury that lasts longer than immediate injury is due to frontal lobe. Stroke & tbi can cross longitudinal fissure between brain hemispheres. 4 layers protect the cortex: skull, dura, arachnoid, pia mater. Dura- really thick, very durable, keeps brain stable. Pia mater- microscopic further protects neuron structure on top of cortex. 1. 5 million tbis per year/ 10 million globally. Over 10 billion dollars spent on tbi related injuries & rehabilitation annually in us. Does not include costs incurred by the individual (personal losses, unemployment) By 2020 tbis will be #1 cause of death & disability in us. Often seen in combat & assault injuries. Skull & meninges intact but brain is jostled. 2 phases of injury: primary injury- the triggering event, secondary injury- swelling & axonal tearing (neurons separate), neuronal death, possible lesion damage, in ohi consider particles that may enter, possible infection, poisoning. Coup-initial hit (brain hitting the front or back whichever comes first)
