The external auditory meatus terminates at the tympanic membrane (tm) The tm is the boundary between the ear canal and the middle ear (me) The tympanic membrane is an oval, thin, semi-transparent membrane that separates the external and middle ear. It functions to transmit sound from the air into the small bones in the middle ear.
