SOCI 1001 Lecture 1: all SociologyNotes
Document Summary
It is not a source of solutions to social problems. It is not a body of actual facts - patterns and what causes them. It is not a restatement of common sense. Sociology is a new way of looking at the ever-changing face of reality - always trying to get at deeper meanings, the non-obvious. An attempt to approximate truth by expanding our base of knowledge and shifting our perspectives. Truth is not always easily discernible, and even when it is, the prism, depending on which side of the river you reside on, may create a wholly different illusion. The scientific study of society, of the ways in which society is organized and operates, and of the factors contributing to both societal stability and societal change - what makes things change. Social life is not haphazard or random. Social life is patterned and predictable - how likely is is that things will play out how we think they will.
