Born into a wealthy, bengali brahmin family; the youngest of 13 children. Well read as a child, similar to vivekanand. Went to public school and university in england and returned degreeless. In 1890, he began managing his family"s estates. Here, he interacts with the working poor that worked the land. Tagore is part of a long tradition of colonial figures who work within the languages of colonizer and colonized to developed a social and literary vision. Primarily a poet, but also wrote short stories, plays, song, novels. We can understand who tagore is through hs large set of works. Looks more easternized with western influences of surrealism of picasso. A small book of poems translated by the irish poet yates. Pound was interested in tagore"s poetics; yeats was interested in poetics and politics. In this period, ireland is engaged in its own independence movement from england.
