• Okada- Ichiro must go thru a series of paths before he can be
rebirthed
• (p. 136) Mr. Carrick offers Ichiro a job; doesn’t care that Ichiro
didn’t serve in war → forgiveness, just wants Ichiro to fight
-certain part of American will forgive/doesn’t care about what
Ichiro did
-Carrick represents the forgiving notion of America
• (p. 165) Mother drowns herself in the tub; Ichiro released from
the pressures of mom; father gains life from this (older version of

• Kenji dies
• (p. 184,187) Emi tells Ichiro to recognize that these things all
happened and to start getting over it
• Climax: Ichiro and Bull get into a fight at the Club Oriental,
Freddie drives away from Bull & car flips and he dies
-Ichiro’s doppelganger died → dark side of Ichiro gone and he’s
released from Freddie
• Rebirth of Ichiro encourages violence → violence leads to
recognition, it is a means to something else rather than an end
• Death is the catalyst for Ichiro to rediscover himself
• When Ichiro first walked into Mr. Carrick's office and saw Gary,
he was painting the “i” in the word “rehabilitation” → the self
