Attention to corporeal body as site of spirituality (albanese) Since late 19th century, americans feel need to align bodies with spiritual needs. Perfection of the body is the perfection of the soul, outward manifestation of something inward. Zen meditation and yoga are imported asian ways of doing this. Physical practices become vehicles for an enlightened body self, but in a sanitized way that eschews sweat, farts, stench that naturally accompanies these practices. Closer to calvinized, evangelical practices than hindu. Religion as connected to sense of ethnic and community identity. You do what the norm does to fit in. Required to adjust religious lives/rituals to american civil religion context. New spirituality , personal enlightenment/transformation or running away from. Asian religions as cool or as a way to be different from other americans. Allowed to appropriate other cultures at will in a free spiritual marketplace. Only as am scholars study as am christianity.
