Missionaries sought to convert the heathen to christianity. Colonialists sought to convert indigenous, the tribal, as well as make profits by extracting material resources. Orientalism is product of missions to dominate asian peoples and places. Orientalism used to justify further actions to control asian subjects for western gain. Responsibility of christian west to convert/civilize backwards east. Enlightened mystic east as savior to the scientific modern west. Internalized fictional, romanticized depictions of the east (fantasies, desires, fears) Western cultural representation of the east/orient asia. Study of east goes hand-in-hand with european domination. West as strong, masculine, advanced, civilized, superior. Cultural stereotyping by media that trains viewers to recognize certain orientalist and racialized figures. Global, instant mediatization of asian wisdom figures. Recognizable figures (i. e. dalai lama) male, asian, bald, robe, wise. Wisdom from the spiritual east to have a broken west. Asian religion made marketable for pop consumption. Often, the asian figures" white standards are the cultural saviors/heros.
