Religions, historical, and racial contexts for asian american religion. American exceptionalism = model of christian-capitalist place and that the rest of the world will follow their lead. Civil religion = what the community does on certain big days (i. e. independence day, Religion is an ideology (preserves status quo or make change) Post-war concept of judeo-christian tradition to keep peace, democracy, & american way of life. Conservative ideology going to church as social expectation. American way of life = belongs to religion in general. Distract people from misery with religion, entertainment, etc. Ideas and cultural form institutionalized, pop culture, and perceived as great and normal. Culture as tool of control by dominant elites. Ex: all chinese 18+ years old employed in certain industries had to pay tax every month. Ex: no chinese small boats allowed to go across bodies of water. Many acts created the sole purpose of making chinese lives hard. Supreme court also made judgements on it.
