Document Summary

**quiz 3: exp 3 & 4, extraction, recrystallization & sublimation, ir spectroscopy (note: today"s lecture will not be on quiz 3) Packed a glass column with caco3 & ran plant extracts through it. Separation of mixtures of compounds based on their polarity & distribution between a solid phase & mobile phase. A micro version of liquid column chromatography. Used in the analysis of the fat content of foods. Separation is achieved if one component of a mixture adheres more to the solid phase than the other. The compounds in the impure mixture interact with 2 phases: the solid phase solvent or the eluent. Mobile phase: liquid/gas that carries compounds through the solid phase. Comes off column first due to nonpolar compounds that don"t interact with phase interact (cid:523)particle size = theoretical plates(cid:524) usually more polar. The ones that don"t interact with solvent very well don"t travel as fast. Different migration rates as molecules absorb onto solid phase/liquid phase.
