Document Summary

Binary acids are composed of hydrogen and a nonmetal. The names for binary acids have the following form: Hydro + base name of nonmetal + -ic + acid. Hcl(g) refers to hydrogen chloride molecules in the gas phase, and not to the acid. The names of acids containing oxyanions ending with -ite take this form: Base name of oxyanion + -ous + acid. Acids: formula has h as first element. 99% of the time the acids will be an aqueous (dissolved). If it is gas form, refer to it as a molecule. Replace the ending -ate with -ic followed by acid. Just because one of these quantities are equivalent doesn"t mean every quantity will be equivalent. A mole is just a count of something, not weight or mass. A mole is defined as the amount of matter that contains as many objects (atom, molecules, etc) as the number of atoms in exactly 12 g of 12c.
