Furthest south: 71 10"s (50 miles from sighting thurston island) Later also discovered the south sandwich islands at the time the farthest south land at 59 s. Disputed first sighting of the antarctic peninsula. On 27 january, 1819, saw distant ice mass. First to find peter i island (69 s, 90 w) farthest s land at time. Visited the south shetland islands 4 february, 1821. Meet nathaniel b. palmer (usa) while there.
