Circumnavigated the globe twice at high southern latitudes. First to cross the antarctic circle on 17 january 1773. Turned around 90 miles north of now prince olav coast. Just missed discovering heard island (sighted 60 years later by peter kemp) Crossed antarctic circle again ross sea. Furthest south: 71 10"s (50 miles from sighting thurston island) Later also discovered the south sandwich islands at the time the farthest south land at 59 s. Disputed first sighting of the antarctic peninsula. On 27 january, 1819, saw distant ice mass. First to find peter i island (69 s, 90 w) farthest s land at time.
