Phylum: chordata features contain notochord or hollow dorsal nerve chord. Speciation event: ancestral lineage gives rise to 2 or more daughter lineages. Ancestral (primitive) traits: trait inherited from a common ancestor. Derived traits: trait that differs from the state in an ancestor. Traits can be lost as well as gained. Amphibians and reptiles aren"t each other"s closest relatives evolutionarily, yet they have traditionally been treated as though they are related. Nevertheless, many aspects of the lives and biology of amphibians and reptiles are complimentary and allow zoologist to study them together using the same or similar techniques. Color, length, ratio of different bones, number of teeth. Biological species concept: members of populations that actually or potentially interbreed. Ensatina eschschoitzii of the same ancestor changed so much as they traveled from different route that as the sub-species meet again at the bottom of the ring, they can"t interbreed anymore.
